During the Six Month Supervisory Period, students must maintain a log of 72 hours reflecting their experience and learning outcomes. This should consist of:

1. A log of 32 hours of dysphagia-related, but not patient-specific, reflective activity such as attending seminars, courses, case conferences, reading articles etc.

2. A log of 40 hours patient-centred “face-to-face” (or remotely e.g. via telehealth) clinical work with access to the supervisor(s) such as individual patient care, observation of supervisor, assessment by supervisor, discussion with supervisor and the multi-disciplinary/inter-disciplinary team, writing up notes for individual patient etc.

The Log of Hours is to consolidate, and demonstrate an ability to apply, the knowledge acquired during the Theoretical Week. Therefore hours must be accumulated AFTER attending the Theoretical Week.

Students must demonstrate evidence of these hours which must be verified by their supervisor(s) in the Supervisor’s Report.

The log can also be used as part of the student’s professional log of reflective practice.

The supervisor does not have to be physically present for the full 40 hours. Access to the supervisor(s) means that the supervisor is accessible, i.e. contactable either by telephone, email or face-to-face following the patient contact in order to answer questions, discuss the case, etc. Contact with the supervisor can be this remote. However, personal contact is recommended. The amount of personal contact varies in each scenario in order to meet the demands of the supervisor and the needs of the student. There needs to be sufficient contact so that the student feels confident. Typically the student would observe the supervisor initially and then the supervisor would observe the student in order for the supervisor to be able to sign off clinical competence/autonomy at the end of the Supervisory Period.

To reduce our carbon footprint, PLEASE DON’T SEND A PAPER COPY OF THE LOGS BY POST.

Once completed, the logs should be saved then attached to an EMAIL and sent to us on (or soon after) the Examination Day. Please don’t send them before the exam day.

The subject line of the email should be: Log of Hours for [insert student number]. Our email address is:

Please do not send incomplete logs. If the Log of Hours is not completed by the Examination Day, the supervisor must contact us to explain:
1. the exceptional reasons why the hours have not been completed
2. the date by which the hours will be completed

If you need clarification on any of the above please contact us.
